Location Notice:
The City of Liberty will be constructing a new "streetscape" in downtown Liberty beginning in early May ... and, of course ... James Country cannot escape the turmoil of the construction! Store Hours:
We invite you to visit our full retail location, as we have many items in the store that do not travel to the field! Our store hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. If you are planning to visit us on a Friday or Saturday, please call ahead --we do sometimes close the store in order to attend outdoor events. It's rare, but it does sometimes happen. If the store will be closed, we always put it on the phone message.

Closed on Sundays and Mondays.

James Country Mercantile was founded by Del and Jean Warren in 1985. The original emphasis was the Fur Trade era, with Del taking a baker tent to rendezvous all over the Midwest, not only to sell his plunder, but to exercise his considerable gun smithing skills. A small mail order division was established to serve customers unable to attend field events.

Starting in 1989, Del and Jean began their journey into the Civil War era. Growth was rapid and soon reached the point where a bigger sutlery tent was needed and help became necessary for the mail order side.

In March of 1996, a retail store was opened at 111 N. Main St. in Liberty, just one block west of the scene of the nation's first daylight civilian bank robbery. The staff was expanded with the addition of Michael Gooch, local reenactor and noted expert on the Border Wars. A second sutlery tent was added to expand service in the field. An international search yielded new and better products, and a network of seamstresses was created to manufacture uniforms and clothing.

Incorporation and a name change followed, and now James Country Mercantile is one of the largest sutleries in existence, offering a full line of historically accurate goods, custom sewing, research, consultation and associated services.

So, just what can you expect from James Country Mercantile? We outfit the 1800s Living Historian from head to foot, outside and underneath! Lady (even shady!) or Gentleman, Civilian or Soldier, Union or Confederate, Lawman or Outlaw, we have your needs. We'll help you establish camp, cook your grub, get your gun and keep it shooting, and generally spruce up your impression.

Our historically oriented seamstresses not only keep a full line of mid-19th century clothing and uniforms ready-made, but we can custom make to your specifications and size.

If you're handy with needle and thread, we carry hundreds of patterns of historic clothing, plus the research books needed to help you do it correctly.

Are you doing research? We have books on every aspect of mid-19th century life, both military and civilian. If you want to know the history or study what "they" did, we can help. Our cassette tapes and CD's let you listen to "their" music while you read.

If you need help fine tuning your impression, we've served as historical consultant to numerous artists, authors, Historic Sites and individual reenactors -- if we don't know the answer we know where to find it!

We can arm the settler, solider or gunny with historically accurate firearms and a full line of cleaning accessories is always on hand. Del is an expert gunsmith and does some custom work.

The small things which can make or break an historical impression are not forgotten at James Country. From tinware to toothbrushes, buttons to brooms, we have whatever you need to create the impression you desire. Our goods are the most historically accurate and highest quality available.

Whether you are a serious and experienced Living Historian, a raw newcomer, or somewhere in-between, James Country Mercantile is your supply and information source.

Again, thanks for coming in! Browse around our online store a while, look us over, find what you need (or email if you can't find it!) and let us know how we can serve you.

Bought a shirt from you two years ago at Zoar, Ohio. Loved it so much I bought two more this weekend. Very unique prints! Great price!
Thanks Jay

Just received my red battleshirt with clusters. Looks even better in person. I am very pleased and will make sure to bring your company's name up to the rest of my company members.
Thanks

When we were at the store last December one of the items we purchased was a pair of boots. I wore these for the first time at a funeral and I just want to let you both know how good they are right out of the gate. With all the walking and standing on the concrete in new boots I had NO ISSUES with sore feet or blisters. Not being my first rodeo, I was smart enough to wear a good pair of heavy cotton socks with a cushioned sole and found the boots to be as comfortable as the boots I wear every day. I don't know who your supplier is but this is a superior pair of boots and I will be recommending James Country and these boots to anyone looking for a good comfortable pair of period boots. Once again James Country has come through with an excellent product. Thank you very much.

Hi, this Battle shirt arrived yesterday. I am so happy, the next job is guaranteed. Thank you!

You guys are the best. Del always takes good care of the troops in the field with the same professional courteous service and tremendous knowledge.
Will call soon. Wayne Dobson

Thanks, Jean, I just received the box this morning. The dresses look excellent.

I just wanted to say the patterns I ordered from you recently arrived and
they look great - thanks very much!

Dear Del,
After almost a year of frustration, “fixes” that didn’t help by two different gunsmiths, you repaired my ’61 Springfield repro at Olustee. You did it while I waited and while your tent was full of customers. You charged me a very modest, almost nominal price. Old Betsy has fired perfectly ever since. I sincerely appreciate your help. Not one of the many “knowledgeable” people I asked suggested a shim under the lock plate to straighten out the hammer strike.
Thank you so much,
Best Regards,
Bill

I received the shirt, and it fits great. I tried it on over a modern t-shirt and long sleeve pull over shirt and it fits nicely, including the neck. The length seems to be about perfect for what I have in mind to wear it untucked as more of a pull over coat. Thank you all so much and I look forward to wearing it in the field.

Got the workman's boots today, and they're amazing! Perfect fit! I couldn't believe they got here so fast! Thanks again for all of your wonderful service. I will definitely be doing business with you again at Brooksville and Olustee.
Daniel Sharits

Just wanted to thank you for calling your husband at an event and reserving me a pair of brogans! The quality is fantastic and they look great. Also, I want to complement you all on a fantastic turn around time. I didn't expect them so soon ... what a great surprise!
Thanks again!

I was wearing my vest, shirt and pants and my wife was wearing her dress, apron and bonnet, all from James Country, when we were picked out of the crowd at Shiloh, Tenn., by one of the Memphis news reporters. He commented on how authentically we were attired and asked for an interview.
Mason and Tiffany, Muddy River Battalion

Just wanted to say thank you for your wonderful service! I ordered a capote pattern on Friday, and got it yesterday! You guys rock! Not only do you have good prices, but your service is top notch! Will recomend!
Thanks once again,
Joe Schilling

A few of our guys have sent me pics of them in the new white wool uniforms they are getting from you. THEY LOOK GREAT, we could not be happier with this impression and so very happy to be dealing with James Country on this. Thanks for all that you do.
Christian Shuster

Received the brogans today, perfect. Well done. Highest recommend for these.

Just wanted to drop a note about the fine Jacket you sent recently. It was more than worth the wait! The fit was perfect!
I will be ordering additional items when we next meet!
Spencer Deal, 15th Arkansas

I purchased the tent you had on line in March and it is one of the best things I have ever done. I have only been to one event with it, but boy, oh boy, was it great ! It is wonderful. I have decided to attend more events just because I can be comfortable! Again, thank you so much for holding on to the tent until I could pick it up! You are a great company!
Megan Faulkner, Crown Point, Indiana

Just a note to tell you thank you for the great looking suit. I wanted something that wasn't black and was pleasingly surprised. The butternut jacket and brown pants are perfect, so if you want great fitting clothes and high quality and great prices this is the place. I will be ordering more.
Thank you,
Frank "Bubba" Sides

I wanted to advise you that the order I placed Friday last, the nice trousers, wool vest, pleated shirt, and cravat, all arrived in good order on Wednesday. I was extremely happy with your selection of trousers, as was my wife, and all the other items were excellent. Thank you so much for your kind help and prompt service, it was a great pleasure to do business with you. While I am a new customer, I will not be a one time customer, and would highly recommend your store to others!
God Bless and have a Merry Christmas,
Gary M Steffen, O'Fallon, Ill., Turner Brigade

My order arrived today, and as usual, it's all there and I'm more than HAPPY with the services your company provides. (I'm on the left in photo.)
Shane Uphoff

I just wanted to say thank you for the good service, and the style of service, you provided me when I visited your tent at recent events: Wauconda this past weekend, and Franklin Grove and Jacksonville before that. I'm the gent who has spent a lot of time looking at patterns for civilian coats and trousers in recent weeks. I finally purchased some at Wauconda, and because of the way you offered to help me and the advice you gave me without pressuring me, I will now make your tent - and your web site - my primary source for my Civil War needs. Thanks and best wishes for a profitable season.
Van O. Furrh, Bloomington, Illinois

Today I received my packet. Just want to thank you for your excellent service and the quality items.
